A number of building projects are in progress across UQ’s
campuses. Among these is the state-of-the-art Advanced
Engineering Building at the St Lucia campus, which will
incorporate multipurpose learning spaces where lectures are
integrated with laboratories that can be used for design, build and
test purposes. The building will be instrumented and monitored in
real-time, allowing students to experiment with features of the
building and see engineering principles and design in action
throughout the structure.
UQ has recently introduced a number of environmental
initiatives through the construction of the carbon-neutral Global
Change Institute building, development of a Climate Action Plan
and opening of a Bike Box facility at the St Lucia campus for UQ’s
many bike commuters, which includes showers, lockers, bike
storage, ironing areas and access to a bike repair service.
The university has set a target of having 50 per cent of its
students complete an overseas study experience by 2025. UQ’s
student exchange program, UQ Abroad, coordinates thousands
of overseas placements each year, including a ten-day intensive
field reporting course for journalism students in Vietnam called
Vietnam Reporter, where students develop content and offer it to
global television networks.
See ‘Getting in’ ratings above and in the Section 3 field of study
Entry to most bachelor degrees at UQ is very competitive,
and subject prerequisites apply to all degrees, although pathways
are available for students who do not meet entry requirements.
Besides secondary and tertiary studies, UQ also considers
applications for admission on the basis of bridging and enabling
programs such as TAFE Queensland’s certificate IV in adult
tertiary preparation and UQ College’s Tertiary Preparation
Program. Students may also be admitted through alternative
entry schemes such as the Special Tertiary Admissions Test
(STAT) and the personal competencies assessment, as well as
work experience and professional qualifications. Students may
also undertake bridging subjects in order to meet subject
prerequisites, including maths, chemistry, physics and biological
UQ has special entry schemes that assist Indigenous
Australians, socioeconomically disadvantaged Year 12 students,
gap year students and those who have completed selected
preparatory courses to gain entry to a UQ program. UQ’s Bonus
Rank Scheme offers Year 12 students up to five bonus points
towards their entry rank if they complete specific subjects such as
a foreign language, Queensland Maths C (or equivalent) or a
university-level enrichment course.
High-achieving Year 12 students have the opportunity to
sample university classes while still at school through the
Enhanced Studies Program, often receiving credit if they go on to
study at UQ.
All institutions have their own admission rules, so refer to
UQ’s website and the local tertiary admission centre’s
